What Does it Truly Mean to be Self-Aware?
As humans, we love to label things. We feel comfort when things are placed in categories, in groups, in ways that we can understand. When it comes to being ‘self-aware’, there are guidelines in place that often determine whether we are or we aren’t. While I recognize that many people hold onto these categories to make sense of their world, I’m here to remind you and let you know that you truly don’t need to subscribe to them. You don’t need to put yourself in any box. You can be self-aware without placing yourself in a stereotypical category.
Many people put pressure on themselves to be the most awake version of themselves, thinking they must do x, y and z for it to be so. If they are going to be self-aware, then they must meditate a certain way, say things a certain way, and only associate with groups that are also doing things this way. While I’m all for practices that help you feel connected and balanced, like meditation and journaling, and a supportive community of like-minded others, you also don’t need to keep yourself small and place limitations on your life to create this self-awareness. Do you see the irony?
You’re kind of missing the point when this is how you go about it - thinking you need to fit in when really you need to just be you. Being self-aware is about living your most authentic genuine life, even if that moves you right outside of any category or box. It’s about being aware of what you love to do. Maybe that’s sitting in a field watching the dandelions blow in the breeze. Maybe it’s singing loudly in your kitchen or dancing with your full body and soul.
Self-awareness is not blindly subscribing to spiritual practices because you think that’s what you should be doing.
It’s finding what brings light into your life, what makes you smile, what fills your heart and then doing more of that. It’s being aware of what you love. It’s noticing what feelings these things evoke. That, that right there is self-awareness.
Take a moment and think of your own idea of self-awareness. Have you placed yourself too far into one category or are you allowing yourself to be your most free, eccentric self? Because there is absolute beauty in letting yourself be exactly who you are – as messy and quirky and weird as that may be. Embrace it!
It’s time to let yourself be so happy in your own energy, without the labels, without the need to follow the spiritual mainstream. Living your passions will always lead you where you need to go.
If you want to further explore what your passions may be and create an aligned life around them, book a reading or session with me for tailored guidance to help you in your journey.
